Book Review: Wolf Six by Alex Shaw

Wolf Six by Alex Shaw is the first of a new Assassin thriller series

When this wolf has you in his cross-hairs you better watch out because chances are, you won’t survive. Wolf Six is perfect for fans of Robert Ludlum, Rory Clements and Andrew Turpin.

The Synopsis for Wolf Six

Killing for a living is easy, living for a reason is much harder

Meet Ruslan Akulov.

In the shadowy world of assassins for hire, he is known as ‘Wolf Six’.

A Ukrainian raised in Moscow, conscripted into Russia’s most covert Special Forces unit ‘The Werewolves’, Akulov is full of loathing for the country that built and then broke him. The only rules he follows now are his own.

Unable to shake the guilt of his past, Akulov has made it his business to seek out those who prey upon the innocent. The name Wolf Six is legendary – whispered by those who know it with fear. But when Akulov accidentally thwarts the armed robbery of a Chicago Bank, he pits himself against both the Russian Bratva and the CIA, setting into motion a spiralling sequence of events which will bring his past back to haunt him, and potentially turn his future to ashes…

His mission of retribution takes him from Chicago to Kyiv, to Havana and back into the US, where Akulov must stop at nothing if he is to remain alive. No simple mission, even for the world’s deadliest assassin.

Perfect for fans of Tom Wood, Vince Flynn and Mark Greaney, this is an explosive action thriller you won’t be able to put down.

More about Wolf Six

Ruslan Akulov, aka Wolf Six, is the man called in when someone seeks retribution and ironically, this particular hired gun however has a moral compass. As a former Russian Special Forces operative with a lethal skill set it is this moral compass that sets him apart from the typical assassin.

Akulov is no stranger to danger, but when he has to intervene during a Chicago bank robbery, he finds himself hunted by both the Russian mafia and the CIA.

At the same time, while trying to keep himself alive, he has been hired for a hit. This particular hit is an old acquaintance: an evil man who lied to him to get what he wanted and therefore Akulov feels his time has come to unleash some well-deserved revenge.

The story sees him travelling across multiple international locations, from the streets of Kyiv to the shadows of Havana, as well as the US and Canada, as he fights not just for survival but also for redemption.

Underneath all of this, there is a further layer to the story where we learn about Akulov’s past – his family losses, his love for his grandmother and his training to become Wolf Six.

My Thoughts on Wolf Six

Alex Shaw’s Wolf Six is an electrifying action thriller with intense action sequences and unexpected twists. Shaw expertly balances the current narrative with moments of introspection, making Akulov’s journey feel both thrilling and personal. While the geopolitical elements woven into the plot add a layer of realism, making the stakes feel even higher.

Ruslan Akulov is more than just an elite warrior—he’s a man shaped by his past, haunted by his choices, and driven by a unique sense of justice. His internal conflicts and evolving motivations give him depth, making him a compelling protagonist rather than just another action hero. The supporting characters, whether allies or enemies, feel well-developed and add richness to the world Shaw has built.

With the combination of sharp storytelling, and a protagonist who commands attention, Wolf Six is an impressive start to what promises to be a gripping series.
