He also seems incredibly rude when he has to talk to ticket officers, shop assistants, hotel receptionists and waiters. I'd hate to bump into him on his travels. Especially if I had the misfortune to sit opposite him on a train.

I am so glad you commented...I wa beginning to think that I was the only person struggling with his style. I agree with your comment about train stations, I think it's an obsession for him.

I just don't get Bryson as a travel writer after having read a couple of his books. He comes across as a miserable curmudgeon who really shouldn't have left home. He can do funny anecdotes, but they are peppered across incredibly dull descriptions of railway stations and Marks and Spencer stores, and he totally fails to interact with the people he encounters. I don't think I'll bother reading this one or any more of his travel books.

That's a shame. As you said it is an old book now and perhaps somewhat dated. Try his more recent work - 'At Home' and his short biography of Shakespeare, also 'A short History of Nearly Everything' still reads well.

In my opinion the best of the Bryson travel books but take care not to take it too seriously, in the main it is simply a platform for Bill to tell an amusing anecdote or two.
