Oh my goodness, this post took me back down memory lane. I visited this site in 2007 and my fear of heights kicked in halfway up. But I was determined to get to the top! I look pale in those pictures at the peak…from terror!
It took me forever to come back down but I am so glad I did it — you’re absolutely right insofar as the views are stunning and it’s so interesting to imagine being transported back in time to an earlier culture.
Thanks for posting and remind me of this experience!

Antonette, You are so right. We hike quite a bit and whilst sometimes the climb up is exhausting, coming down is always so painful especially on your joints. Well worth a trip though when you make it to Mexico. I think people tend to head to Chichen Itza first but this one holds a great deal of history as well. It is almost worth doing both as they are from different times in Mayan history so things you see at one site you may not see at the other. 🙂

Looks like a great adventure! I had never heard of this site before so will note it down in case I ever get to go to Mexico. In general, many people don’t realize that going down is usually way more strenuous than walking up, not when it comes to endurance but because the chance of falling is much higher. Happy you made it down safely though!

It was the fear-factor for me when coming down. I am known as being a bit accident prone and just kept thinking – ‘if anyone is going to fall it will be me!!!’. Everyone is clearly a bit cautious though – no-one went running down them. 🙂
