Who Is Charles Cumming?

Winner of the CIWA Ian Fleming Steel Dagger award, A Foreign Country is an intrinsically written spy novel that highlights the secret world.  The author, Charles Cumming, was clearly inspired to write spy thrillers after he was approached by MI6 in 1995 and this is now his sixth novel.

The Story of A Foreign Country by Charles Cumming

The first female Chief of MI6 is due to take up her role in only a couple of weeks when, at the last minute, she decides to take some annual leave and disappears.  Whilst this would not normally be a cause for concern after only one day Amelia Levene fails to return to her art classes she has booked in the South of France.

Disgraced Officer Thomas Kell is sent in to find out what has happened.  He has just a few short weeks to find her before her official meeting with the Prime Minister…will he succeed?

This story takes a further turn when Amelia’s past comes back to haunt her.  As a young girl in Tunis she became infatuated with an older, married man.  When she becomes pregnant she knows she needs to make a clean break and therefore disappears.  Is history now repeating itself?

Kell follows her trail through France and back to Tunisia where family bonds are reignited and a twisted plot begins to unfold.  Amelia believes she has found her long lost adoptive son but is this all a front for something more sinister?

Getting a glimpse at the spy world this novel shows that everyone is human, even those that are recruited to protect us.

If you are after a thrilling read this is a must for your book shelf.
