A selection of destinations to see monkeys in the wild

Whether you’re opting to travel by van around a foreign land or you’re employing the services of a local tour guide and a bus, many people embark on their various adventures around the world in an attempt to see as many animals as they possibly can. Monkeys are a preference for many travellers, with the opportunity to see them monkeying around in their natural habitat drawing many holidaymakers in. 

After all, people generally adore monkeys. There are so many different species of them; they’re entertaining to watch, highly intelligent, and possess a number of similarities to us humans. Also featured in iconic movies like Ace Ventura: Pet Detective and in well-liked games of today like the fun 3 Dancing Monkeys, monkeys are obviously creatures that many travelers are desperate to see in the wild. Thankfully, for people with a soft spot for monkeys, there are a number of destinations where you’re more than likely to see them in the flesh. 

Borneo is home to some of the world’s most endangered species 

A location that is famous around the world for its wildlife, Borneo is filled with proboscis monkeys and Borneo orangutans, both of which are endangered species. You’ll be lucky to see them, but it certainly isn’t impossible. Found on both islands, they tend to be seen on the river. The proboscis monkey is particularly easy to spot given their distinctive features, such as their oversized nose. If you head to Borneo, you’re certainly in for a special treat. 

Snow monkeys are one of Japan’s main attractions 

Alongside the country’s unique culture and some of its stunningly beautiful sights, Japan also has a large population of snow monkeys that many holidaymakers can’t wait to see. The Snow Monkey Park near Joshinestu Kogen National Park in Nagano is the place to see them, although it’s probably best to go during the winter months as they tend to roll around in the snow. 

Monkeys are everywhere in Brazil 

Locations like the Amazon rainforest are filled with wildlife, monkeys included. In fact, for adventurers, the Amazon is the place to go. Also, monkey fans are catered for here, with Pousada Rio Roosevelt Lodge in Brazil’s state of Amazonas being home to a wonderful selection of monkeys. With over 12 species of primates to be seen, it’s one of the best places around to see these loveable creatures up close. You might even be lucky enough to see the endangered Peruvian spider monkeys or even the white-nosed bearded saki. 

Costa Rica has an array of species 

Costa Rica is a wonderful country to frequent for a number of reasons, but for monkey lovers, it’s also at the top of their list. Home to an array of species, including Central American squirrel monkeys, white-faced capuchin monkeys, and mantled howler monkeys, they’re prominent all over the country. The best place to see them, though, is almost certainly Manuel Antonio National Park. You’re likely to hear them before you see them, too! 

Khao Yai National Park is Thailand’s best option 

Alongside its iconic Full Moon Party and the country’s beautifully pristine beaches, Thailand is packed full of monkeys in various locations. Khao Yai National Park is Thailand’s best option, though, with this popular park housing the endangered white-handed gibbon and a wide range of other species, including the pig-tailed macaque. Khao Sam Roy Yot National Park is another fantastic option for monkeys. Overall, for monkey enthusiasts, Thailand is a great place to go. 

Other destinations where monkeys can be seen in the wild include Kanha National Park (India) and Cape of Good Hope (South Africa).
